I have seen many people having issues either on a new installation or an upgrade.

So, I hesitated on upgrading my working Carbonio CE 25.6 to 25.9

Just some details of my system:

Proxmox ve as host system.

Virtual machine: OS is Ubuntu Server 22.04, 32GB Ram, 8 CPU Cores

Today I decided to start my upgrade process. Of course I did a full backup of the virtual machine.

Steps I performed:

https://docs.zextras.com/carbonio-ce/html/upgrade/upgrade.html

I read and followed the instructions.

This is important: Checklist - It says: ....... After the upgrade of that Node, before rebooting, execute command as the zextras user

I then followed the Upgrade Notes point by point and when I reached 9. Reboot, I executed the command in Checklist above followed by Reboot.

Unfortunately, I can not upload my screen capture here as there is no upload option.

It took probably about 5 - 8 minutes to reboot.

To my surprise my upgrade just worked. Have not tested all features, but email send/receive and chat do work.

So, makes me wonder how others have done their upgrades! Is it just a matter of NOT precisely following steps?

I am going to do a fresh install on both Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04 and report back in separate posts.

it would be a good thing to figure out how can we make the installation/upgradation instructions more easy to understand and follow. And thank you for your feedback.

Let us know how it goes with the fresh installation on both Ubuntu 22.04LTS and Ubuntu 24.04LTS

Regards,

My installation was completely wiped clean, using an installation script, and like others, I had the same problems...

Ubuntu 24.04.

😐

I haven't tested sending and receiving emails because I've had so many problems before: constant webmail errors, options in Admin/Cos that aren't saved, etc.

Therefore, for me, this is "unusable," as I can't leave something like this in production.

Definitely, that should not be a production server.

I would request you to try following approach:

Regarding non-persistent admin-ui settings, out team is checking it. Let's do one thing to go deeper in this issue:

  •  Save the global configuration before any change
su - zextras -c "carbonio prov gacf > /tmp/before-change"
  • Do some random changes and restart services.
su - zextras -c "carbonio prov gacf > /tmp/after-change"

Now try to do a diff to understand, if the changes saved somewhere in the global configuration file or haven't saved at all.

diff /tmp/before-change /tmp/after-change

Without this, I haven't noticed anything else. About webpage/admin login page, restart carbonio-catalog.service solves it. I would request to try it and tag me with your findings.

Hi!

I will try to do that process with diff that you mentioned.

Regarding the error in Webmail, when I restart the server it works again, but then it gives the "

somethin went wrong'..." error again.

I have a few words regarding the upgrade section here:

https://docs.zextras.com/carbonio-ce/html/upgrade/toc.html

The documentation will show what one needs to do before upgrading.

Carbonio also has a repo defined and new packages are released.

And Ubuntu has regular updates available frequently.

Admins or whoever does maintain a system can and will do regularly:

apt update and apt upgrade

So, here is why I see a problem. Some Carbonio updates as well as ubuntu are available and one

does just apt update and apt upgrade and those will be processed. But, the documentation says

this and that is supposed be done before an upgrade takes place.

I hope my explanation makes sense.

I understood what you meant. It is valid scenario. There could be situations when we do not want to update/upgrade system packages or carbonio packages vice-versa. I would discuss this with the team to understand and estimate possible actions on this issue. Thanks for the feedback and I will try to get back to you as soon as get any idea.
