Distinguishing between local IOS contacts and server contacts

I have a user whose phone was updated from IOS5 to 6. He has
some 1,400 contacts. Under old IOS 5 you could distinguish between
local contacts and server contacts but that function was lost from the
5 to 6 switch. Now he has some contacts local to his phone and others
on the server but never the two worlds meet so he is stuck with local
contacts trapped on his phone and since Apple overhauled iTunes
they dropped a lot of the tools used to manage contacts/calendars etc
since they stuffed it all in 'the cloud'. Any ideas how to get this contact
data out of this or will each contact have to be readded?
