Dear community,

we are a small company and are currently looking for a new communication solution. The Internet presence is hosted externally (shared hosting, no co-location) and file servers are located in-house without a cloud connection. E-mails are processed via the Internet provider and we access them via IMAP using a DSL connection with a dynamic IP, i.e. there is no fixed IP (only a DynDNS connection from outside) and the MX record for the domain runs on the provider. Can Carbonio CE be operated in such a way that it is installed locally and accesses the IMAP folders of the provider and can send via SMTP?

Regards, Niko

Hi,

Great to hear about your story.

You did great so far. But if you want to have an on-premises email server you need to ensure the following things:

1. Domain and DNS records: You need a domain.  You can publish the DNS records on your providers' nameservers or any free public nameserver. This is how you can manage the DNS records.

2. Server Hardware: You need physical server hardware that meets the minimum requirements for the email solution.

3. IP address: It is recommended that your server have a dedicated & fixed public IP address. However, if your server contains a private IP address, you may need port forwarding at your router or provider's end.

4. Accessibility: You can access your mailboxes via IMAP/POP using webmail or any third-party app (e.g., Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) and send emails using SMTP.

5. Additional Information: It is not recommended to send high-volume bulk/promotional emails using your email server.

I hope it helps.

Regards,

Sharif
