Will an externalImport restore deleted items too?

Hello,

I'm am worriying that an external import will restore all deleted items in the server too, can you please confirm this? I used a trial installation with a retention policy of 20 days on the server from which I'm trying to move my data (and upgrade zimbra version) however I would dislike if it would restore everything.
