Hi,

Have Release 8.8.15.GA.4179.UBUNTU20.64 UBUNTU20_64 FOSS edition, Patch 8.8.15_P44.

Want to migrate it to Carbonio CE but I don't want to buy another server for the migration (family private home server). Can there be an inplace server upgrade with automatic migration?

Or, if the Carbonio CE is installed in another directory, not /opt/zimbra/, I can then do the Zimbra migration and stop Zimbra (and uninstall?), and then install Carbonio CE on the same server and continue the migration? I am missing some hints to do a migration if you only have one server.

Do not know what I should do. Or should I look for other OSE/FOSS Zimbra 10 hack? I have been running a private Zimbra server for years at home and want to continue doing it securely for many more years.

Regards

@sigtrap

Hi,

We can understand your emotions and concerns. However, it is not possible to install two different versions of a system in the same host OS and then migrate the data no matter what are the platforms or systems.

So we would recommend having another server freshly install a new system (i.e. carbonio CE) and then migrate the service and data gradually.

We hope you would understand.

Have a great day.

Thanks and regards,

Sharirf

Once you follow @sharif instructions and have that new server installed you may like to use this little tool I did to help you migrate from Zimbra to Carbonio:

Zimbra to Carbonio – Z2C

Thanks.

When I read the script I can see that Carbonio CE is installed under /opt/zextras. So I guess I could:

  1. Make a backup of Zimbra.
  2. Run the z2c.sh script as zimbra in the directory /opt/zimbra.
  3. Close down Zimbra.
  4. Move /opt/zimbra to /opt/bak-zimbra
  5. Install Carbonio CE ( https://community.zextras.com/how-to-deploy-a-private-e-mail-server-for-free-using-zextras-carbonio-ce/ )
  6. Run the restore.sh script as zextras in the directory /opt/bak-zimbra
  7. Start Carbonio CE
  8. If it works, then I have to uninstall zimbra, maybe to move the /opt/bak-zimbra to /opt/zimbra, and then follow https://webhostinggeeks.com/howto/how-to-uninstall-zimbra-on-ubuntu/ or use -u switch on a zimbra install script. Dont know yet.

That could maybe work?

I'm sorry to say but that will NEVER work.

You MUST copy the backup to another server. Format this one, install a fresh Ubuntu 20.04 and start a fresh Carbonio install. Then copy backup back and restore it.

Dear community.

Thank you for your knowledge!

Is it ActiveSync to Carbonio CE?

Ok, thanks.

I will then:

  1. Make a backup of Zimbra.
  2. Run the z2c.sh script as zimbra in the directory /opt/zimbra.
  3. Move the migration data directory to thumbdrive.
  4. Shutdown the old server and swap to a new harddrive and install a fresh Ubuntu 20.04 and start a fresh Carbonio install.
  5. Copy the migration data directory to the new harddrive.
  6. Run the restore.sh script as zextras.
  7. Start Carbonio CE.

(I use the mail server also as a HTPC and SMB host so I have to reinstall that to, and I have one harddrive for OS and another for shares and Zimbra as I want to seperate shares and email from OS so I actually will buy to new harddrives for the new server)

I like the migration script as you don't need two running servers at the same time when migrating.

Thanks again for all the help

No Carbonio CE doesn't support ActiveSync.

Well... =)

By default it doesn't but we can add a third part software called Z-Push that's an Open Source implementation of ActiveSync protocol and it works great.

I did a tutorial about how to install and get it working on Zimbra OSE but it works great in Carbonio CE as well.

The tutorial was written in Portuguese but you can use Google Translator.

Z-Push no Zimbra: o jeito mais fácil!

Enjoy
