Restoring only a single item is one of the most common problems an administrator faces. It can easily take the administrator half a day to restore the whole account and be able to retrieve the needed item. Alternatively they can use a Zextras suite functionality called single itam restore implemented in the Zextras backup and restore system. With Zextras suite single itam restore, a system administrator can retrieve the requested item within a minute of work saving a lot of time and stress.
What Is Single Item Restore
This feature allows system administrators to restore a single item from the backup of a given account.
It happens a lot when a user needs an item that has been deleted accidentally. The most common scenario that happens every day is when a user deletes a calendar event to reschedule it to a different time, but the deleted appointment included an important contact number which is not available in the new appointment entry anymore. Therefore, the only hope they have is to ask the Zimbra system administrators to help them restore the deleted item.
Why You Need This
To put it simply, it saves a lot of time. Not only does restoring the whole account to restore a single item is a waste of time but it happens so frequently that it almost includes 90% of the recovery-related problems that need system administrators’ intervention.
How It Works
This feature is made possible by Zextras snapshot-based backup system. A snapshot-based backup system allows you to keep a frozen copy of a virtual machine in a valid state and roll
it back when needed. Using a snapshot-based backup instead of a database backup has two main advantages:
- Consistency of data,
- Casual restore of a single item.
This allows us to recover an individual item including emails, calendar events, contacts, tasks, etc. even if they are manually removed from the Trash folder. You can choose which item to recover without the need to recover the whole account.
Let’s see how simple is to restore an account using the Zextras suite.
To restore any item into the corresponding account, the only thing you need is your backup. It can be done using zxsuite backup doItemRestore
specifying the account name and item ID. For example,
zxsuite backup doItemRestore john@example.com 2002
Restores item 2002 into its corresponding mailbox john@example.com.
