Hi everyone, and Thank you Zextras team for providing packages for Zimbra 9 OSE.
It looks like Synacor will not offer OSE version, and so I believe they will not provide update for such version. However It is crucial to have relevant updates for this product, so a few questions come to my mind before onboarding Zimbra 9:
So, where does the upgrade/update come from ?
Is there update at all yet ?
Is there the same upgrade process as Zimbra 8.8.15 (via repository) ? or only via patches ?
Does the upgrade repository come from (maintain by) Synacor or from Zextras as a per zimbra 9 itself ?
And if it come from Zextras, how long will it take from the source upgrade to the OSE repository to present updates ?
Thank you for your explanations.
Hi dominix,
and thanks for appreciating our commitment to the Zimbra Community.
Since last year, Zextras provides, for users' convenience only, the unofficial builds of Synacor’s Zimbra, completely based on the Zimbra 9 Open Source project.
The installer uses the same process of 8.8.15, so it downloads other packages and third-party directly from Zimbra repository. Same for the zimbra-*-patch packages.
In other words, yes, the Zimbra 9 build provided by Zextras uses the same upgrade process of 8.8.15, via the official repository.
Since these repositories are available for public access, there's no need to use different ones, even because this means altering the source code of the installer, while these are builds curated by Zextras, based on the source code as made available by Synacor without any substantial changes.
Hoping my explanation covers all your questions.
For any doubts about the build feel free to ask!

Thanks Luca for this clear statement.
All this story is a bit strange to understand. This looks like Zimbra(synacor) is maintaining the repository for 9.0 OSE (and so provide binary packages for theses updates) but do not distribute it... I may not understand correctly their position on OSE product.
Thanks anyway to your team for the job you've done.
I agree. In fact I don't understand as a community user if I should stay on 8.8.15 that is "official" or download this OSE build. Any suggestion is appreciated
Same for me...
a lots of Zimbra Admin I know are looking for Kopano as a replacement.... the unclear Synacor strategy about OSE is driving their client away.

Hi Luca
does this still apply? It seems Zimbra 9 updates aren't available anymore (bug or policy?)
Will Zextras manage updates in near future? If not, how can one stay on OSS version? This starts to not make sense anymore
Hi @bulletxt,
Take a look at this thread https://community.zextras.com/forum/zimbra-ose-9-by-zextras/zimbra-9-open-source-is-not-updated/ in which you'll find a lot of information you're searching for.
I hope this helps.
Dear @bulletxt ,
thanks for your comment.
Starting from p15, zimbra-*-patch packages have been moved away from the OSE repository. Furthermore, the new patch introduces some NE dependencies, making it incompatible with the current OSE installation, hence preventing OSE users to perform the update.
We are already working on a solution and we plan to make it available to the community by the end of this month.
Stay tuned for more news!
